Course Description

This qualification aims to prepare learners for roles as Retail Buyers, providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge to source, purchase, and allocate stock for retail and wholesale outlets. Learners will learn to manage supplier relationships, select suppliers, buy products, and allocate stock to stores. The program addresses the need for skilled buyers and planners, recognized as scarce skills in the wholesale and retail sector.

The qualification is intended for individuals who have completed Grade 12 and wish to move into buying or planning roles. This includes unemployed individuals seeking entry into the field and those currently in supervisory or management positions looking to specialize. The curriculum emphasizes the critical role buyers and planners play in managing cash flow and enhancing business operations, contributing to economic growth.

The program includes knowledge, practical skills, and work experience modules. Learners will study key concepts such as supplier relationship management, product sourcing, and stock allocation. Practical modules provide hands-on experience in managing suppliers, negotiating, and planning stock allocations. Work experience modules allow learners to apply these skills in real-world scenarios. Assessment is both formative and summative, focusing on the practical and theoretical competencies necessary for success as a Retail Buyer.

Learners will also study the principles of buying merchandise and allocating stock to stores, with a total of 26 credits available across these areas.
  • Practical Skill Modules focus on hands-on skills such as managing supplier and stock performance, navigating the supply chain, sourcing products, negotiating with suppliers, buying products, and planning and allocating stock to stores. These modules provide 40 credits in total, emphasizing real-world application of learned principles.
  • Work Experience Modules ensure learners gain practical experience in managing supplier and stock performance, sourcing products, setting ranges, negotiating and recording product purchases, and allocating stock to stores. This part of the course offers 65 credits and aims to solidify the learner’s ability to perform effectively in a retail buying environment.
